Sometimes in writing courses, we try too hard to draw clean lines and boundaries and to discern storylines, trends and issues: Like, what's up with American golf? Who is the next Tiger? Golf is suffering from too many for the first time the winners?

And then along comes a story like Darren Clarke.

Comes a 42 year old with a famous name in golf, but with no major victory. Sometimes a player we all remember the early 2000s, but a player who has not finished top-10 in A major since 2001.Sometimes a guy who professes his love of drink and people, good humor and perspective - but a guy who believed in the fading landscape of golf, despite a European tour victory in May, his first in three years, his world ranking a lowly 111th.
